How to Watch NFL Games

At a glance

NFL games are divided between locally assigned Sunday broadcasts, national television windows, exclusive streaming events and out-of-market Sunday Ticket. An NFL+ subscription has different mobile and replay entitlements, so the game and device both determine which service works.

Sunday afternoon, Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football and out-of-market games have different US viewing arrangements.

NFL+ mobile live-game entitlements differ from Sunday Ticket television access, and sports streaming device compatibility matters when you plan to watch on a smart TV rather than a phone.

How to watch NFL games without buying the wrong subscription

The answer to where an NFL game is available usually begins with its broadcast window, not a streaming service's advertising. In the United States, the NFL divides games among local Sunday afternoon broadcasts, national prime-time windows, selected international dates, holiday exclusives and out-of-market packages. Each arrangement is different, and the service that carried your team last week may have no rights to its next game. A New York viewer and a Chicago viewer can even receive different Sunday afternoon matchups on the same broadcast network. That is why a universal promise to show “every NFL game” deserves closer scrutiny than a carefully labeled schedule.

CBS and FOX are central to the Sunday afternoon schedule, but coverage varies by local affiliate and the matchups assigned to a television market. NBC carries Sunday Night Football, while ESPN and ABC are important to Monday Night Football. Amazon Prime Video holds Thursday Night Football and its Black Friday presentation. Some dates involve Netflix, NFL Network or other special arrangements. The NFL's official viewing directory is a reliable place to check a specific game before paying, especially because the league can make schedule and distribution adjustments during a season.

The selection tool above matches common US game situations to their usual viewing routes. It does not know your ZIP code, identify a team's next opponent or check a live schedule. Treat the results as a starting point, then confirm the individual matchup in the NFL's official listings.

NFL viewing options at a glance

Game or access type Main US viewing route Important qualification
Local Sunday afternoon game CBS or FOX, depending on market and assignment A network does not carry every Sunday matchup nationwide
Sunday Night Football NBC and Peacock Availability and account access should be checked for the particular game
Monday Night Football ESPN and selected ABC broadcasts An ABC broadcast is not guaranteed for every ESPN game
Thursday Night Football Prime Video Special games and regional broadcasts may have separate terms
Out-of-market Sunday afternoons NFL Sunday Ticket Generally intended for eligible Sunday afternoon games outside your home market
Local and national live games on a phone NFL+ Live access is subject to mobile/tablet restrictions and market rules
Select international or holiday games Event-specific partners Do not assume the usual weekly broadcaster carries a special fixture

Why local television still matters

A streaming subscription is not always a substitute for checking the local broadcaster. Broadcast rights are assigned on a geographic basis, and the same early or late Sunday slot may feature different teams in different cities. A viewer trying to follow a home-market team should first identify the local CBS or FOX affiliate and then check whether the desired game is on its schedule. If an antenna receives that station, an eligible over-the-air broadcast can be an economical route, although reception depends on your location and equipment and is never guaranteed by a website.

A national television package can also contain the right network but not grant the same permissions across all devices. Some services permit live viewing on televisions, mobile devices and browsers; others distinguish between a live feed, an authentication login and an on-demand replay. In particular, the NFL describes NFL+ live local and national game access for phones and tablets, not unrestricted live viewing of every game on every connected television. Checking device eligibility in advance matters just as much as checking the channel name.

Sunday Ticket, NFL+ and regular network coverage are not interchangeable

NFL Sunday Ticket is designed around out-of-market Sunday afternoon games. If your favorite team is appearing in your own local market, the relevant broadcast normally follows the local rights arrangement rather than automatically becoming available through an out-of-market purchase. National and exclusive telecasts are also handled separately. A fan who watches only one team should estimate how many of its games are actually eligible before deciding whether the package fits their needs; someone who enjoys watching several distant teams each Sunday may draw a different conclusion.

NFL+ serves a different situation. The league's support material describes live local and national regular-season games on a mobile phone or tablet, along with replay features available on other devices. Premium features, replays and live game rights must be considered separately, because a list of features does not establish that every live matchup works on a living-room television. The sports streaming cost calculator lets you compare the months you plan to use each paid service without assuming an outdated advertised price. Enter the prices shown to you at checkout, rather than treating an online cost example as a provider quote.

Thursday and Monday night require their own check

Thursday Night Football is associated with Amazon Prime Video, so it is often the simplest weekly window to identify. That does not mean any calendar entry labeled Thursday will necessarily be covered by a normal Prime subscription. International fixtures, late-season schedule changes, local television exceptions and holiday programming can affect the answer. The correct test is whether the particular game appears on the league's current viewing listing and whether your Prime account is in the permitted territory.

Monday nights present another source of confusion. ESPN is a principal rights holder, and selected games are also presented on ABC. Someone with access to ABC alone should not infer that they can watch every ESPN Monday game. Conversely, a provider bundle that includes ESPN may already cover a game without requiring an additional purchase. A Sunday-to-Monday switch changes the rights picture even when the same two teams are playing, so keep the date and television window together when looking up coverage.

Watching the NFL while traveling or living outside the United States

A subscription purchased in the United States may not carry identical rights when accessed abroad. The league lists NFL Game Pass International through DAZN for eligible international markets, while individual countries may have local broadcast partners and exclusions. The availability of a global sports brand does not mean its licensing rights cross borders automatically. A viewer in Pakistan, Canada or the United Kingdom should use the relevant country's official viewing directory rather than copying a US channel list.

Even within the United States, travel can change which Sunday afternoon game counts as local. Market assignments are tied to where a broadcast is received or where a platform determines eligible location, not simply to a team's home city on a schedule. VPNs and attempts to bypass territorial restrictions can breach service terms and do not provide reliable access. If travel is planned, find the game's local broadcaster at the destination and check whether your existing service supports that device and location.

A practical example: following one team for a month

Suppose your team plays a home-market Sunday afternoon game, a Thursday night game, a nationally scheduled Sunday evening game and a Monday night game over four weeks. These four fixtures may require checking four different distributions, even though they are all regular-season football. Begin by checking the league schedule and the local assignment for the afternoon game; then see whether your household already has access to NBC, ESPN or the applicable ABC broadcast. Only after that should you consider paying for an additional service to fill any genuine gaps.

The choice is especially important for families whose viewing is limited to a single television. NFL+ mobile rights may be convenient for an individual on a tablet but unsuitable for a household that wants to gather around a TV for a live game. Sunday Ticket can be valuable for the right out-of-market fan yet redundant for someone whose team is reliably televised locally. A small amount of checking can prevent paying twice for coverage that an existing antenna, cable provider or streaming bundle already offers.

Where the viewing rights actually differ

The 2026 schedule does not have a single universal NFL television subscription. CBS and FOX carry geographically assigned Sunday afternoon contests; fans who follow a team outside their home market may need Sunday Ticket for eligible early and late Sunday games. That out-of-market product does not cover an ESPN Monday game, a Peacock Sunday-night game or an exclusive Netflix holiday matchup. Checking the exact team, week and broadcast window before choosing a subscription prevents paying for a service that does not carry the desired live game.

NFL+ has a separate device limitation: eligible live local and nationally televised matches are available on phones and tablets, while full-game replay features follow a different access rule on connected televisions. A mobile NFL+ stream is therefore not equivalent to Sunday Ticket on a living-room TV. For a household watching different teams, a local antenna or pay-TV arrangement may supply some CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC broadcasts, but the remaining subscription requirements depend on the schedule and geographic blackout rules.

Match NFL broadcast windows to your location

An accurate answer to “where can I watch the NFL?” always needs at least the teams, date, viewing region and device. General rights tables can narrow down the likely service, but they cannot replace the event-specific listing. If you need to translate a scheduled ET start into your home clock, the sports time zone converter uses the actual calendar date to account for daylight-saving changes. Confirm the announced kickoff time with the league before making plans, particularly near a schedule change or an international game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I watch all NFL games with one subscription?

No single ordinary national subscription covers every Sunday afternoon game in every U.S. market. CBS and FOX assign a local game to each region, while NFL Sunday Ticket provides eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon broadcasts. It excludes separate national prime-time windows such as Monday Night Football and Sunday Night Football, as well as streaming-exclusive Thursday and holiday contests. Fans following one out-of-market team should confirm that the game is not their local broadcast before paying for Sunday Ticket. A different weekly matchup can move from a Sunday afternoon window to a national exclusive, changing which service is necessary.

Does NFL+ work on a television for live games?

No. NFL+ permits eligible live local and national games on supported phones and tablets and supplies other features depending on plan, but it is not a live out-of-market Sunday afternoon package for televisions. Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV serves a different set of games and devices. An NFL+ Premium replay option should not be mistaken for a simultaneous live broadcast right. Check whether the viewer needs real-time action on a TV, on a phone or a replay after the game; that distinction determines whether either purchase is appropriate.

What counts as an out-of-market NFL game?

The Thursday and Black Friday package is centered on Prime Video, while specific 2026 holiday and international events appear on the services named in the weekly official NFL schedule, including Netflix and NFL Network. Ordinary CBS or FOX coverage does not automatically follow an exclusive game that changes days or networks. For each fixture, verify the date, kickoff time, broadcast network and any special subscription or device restriction. National rights and local Sunday distribution are separate, and an event can be rescheduled after the initial league calendar appears.

Are CBS and FOX Sunday afternoon games free?

Some eligible local games are available over the air through a broadcast antenna where a viewer receives the station. Internet streams, subscription access and reception conditions are separate questions. Confirm the assigned local affiliate rather than assuming every game on a national schedule is free to everyone.

Where do I check a last-minute schedule change?

Use the NFL's current schedule and official viewing listing. Networks and local assignments can change, especially when scheduling rules allow a matchup to move to another time slot. Articles about an earlier season may still describe the original broadcasting agreement but not the current fixture.

Can an international viewer buy NFL Sunday Ticket?

Sunday Ticket is a US-focused out-of-market product. The NFL provides separate international guidance and lists Game Pass International through DAZN in supported territories. Local restrictions and distributor availability should be checked in the country where the viewer plans to watch.
